Fire Engineering Excellence Award 2019
Upon request of potential participants, more time is required to prepare the nomination form and associated documents, the deadline of nomination has been extended to 22.2.2019 (Friday).
INVITATION OF ENTRY
The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers, Fire Division would like to invite entries of outstanding Fire Engineering projects and researches for participation in the Fire Engineering Excellence Award 2019.
OBJECTIVES:
- Inculcate fire engineering design culture among fire engineering design professionals and other stakeholders;
- Give recognition to fire engineering professionals, developers, building owners, project teams for fire engineering achievements and excellent achievement on fire engineering research; and
- Provide an avenue through which competition for design excellence can be enhanced.
TARGET PARTICIPANTS
Fire engineering professionals, architects, consultants, developers, building owners, project teams and researchers in creating an excellent fire engineering building environment for its occupants and fire fighters.
ELIGIBILITY
Project Award – Hong Kong Projects
- At least one key member of the project team must be a member of the Fire Division of The HKIE.
- Each eligible building project can only be nominated by one applicant.
- Nominated projects must be within the territorial limit of HKSAR.
- Nominated projects must possess an Occupation Permit or Completion Certificate (for government projects) issued on or between 1 June 2008 and 31 December 2018.
Project Award - Mainland (including Macau & Taiwan) / Overseas Projects
- At least one key member of the project team must be a member of the Fire Division of The HKIE.
- Each eligible building project can only be nominated by one applicant.
- Nominated projects must be outside the territorial limit of the HKSAR and must be led by Hong Kong based firms.
- Nominated projects must be practically completed on or between 1 June 2008 and 31December 2018.
R&D Award
- The applicant must be a member of the Fire Division of The HKIE.
- Nominated research paper must be written in English.
- Nominated research paper must be issued in authoritative journal(s) on or between 1 January 2014 and 31 December 2018.
- Each applicant can submit more than one application.
CATEGORIES OF AWARD
Award categories include Grand Award, Commendation Award and Finalist whereas Grand Award will be presented to the most distinguished project(s) and R&D paper(s) as follows:
Project Award with sub-categories:
- Local project(s)
- Mainland (including Macau & Taiwan) / Overseas project(s).
R&D Award
Research paper shall be related to the application of fire engineering in buildings / infrastructures. There is no sub-category under R&D Award.
JUDGING CRITERIA
The Jury Panel will determine the award winners, taking into consideration of the following criteria:
For Project Award
- Fire engineering design
- Innovation and creativity
- Integration with other discipline(s) of HKIE
- Safety
- Sustainability
- Maintainability
- Manageability
- Aesthetic
- Unusual feature
For R&D Award
- Fire engineering application
- Innovation
- Theoretical background
- Sustainability
NOMINATION FEE
- Nomination fee in the sum of HK$3,500 and HK$2,000 respectively for Project Award and R&D Award; and
- Nomination fee will be refunded to those project which are not eligible for entry.
PROMOTION FEE
Promotion fee in the sum of HK$30,000 for each Grand Award, HK$18,000 for each Commendation Merit and HK$8,000 for each Finalist will be collected on top of the nomination fee for promotion (including newspaper advertisement) and trophy production.
Promotion fee is not applicable to the R&D Award winners.
NOMINATION DOCUMENTS
- Payment cheque with nomination fee made payable to “The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers – Fire Division”
For Project Award
- Copy of Occupation Permit, copy of Completion Certificate or copy of acknowledgement of practical completion, as appropriate.
- 10 hard copies of competition materials including text and supporting materials, in English and bound into A3-sized booklets (a maximum of 5 pages, not including cover page).
Guidelines on competition materials are:
(a) Name and full postal address of the nominated project;
(b) Names of the client, architect, consultant and others relevant parties; (c) Authorization letter from client or owner of the nominated project;
(d) Synopsis in not more than 500 words composing:
i) an executive summary outlines the functions and merits of the project;
ii an introduction provides the fire engineering design concept and approach; and iii) a brief on features as outlined in Judging Criteria.
- 2 CD-ROMs containing above nomination materials.
For R&D Award
- Copy of the acknowledgement of the publication date of the research paper.
- 10 hard copies of research paper written in English.
- 10 hard copies of Curriculum Vitae.
- 10 hard copies of competition materials including text and supporting materials, in English
Guidelines on competition materials are:
(a) Name, title, organization and full postal address of the applicant; (b) Synopsis in not more than 500 words composing:
i) paper abstract; and
ii) a brief on unusual features, e.g. innovation, engineering application, sustainability, etc.
- CD-ROMs containing above nomination materials.
Notes:
- Organizing Committee of the Fire Engineering Excellence Award 2019 reserves the ultimate right to make final decision on the eligibility of all entries.
- Decision of the Jury Panel is final.
- Project teams of all short-listed entries are required to submit a presentation PowerPoint (maximum 10 slides) and conduct a presentation to the Jury Panel.
- Winners will be awarded in Fire Engineering Excellence Award ceremony and winners are required to present their design in the ceremony.
- Site visits will be arranged for short-listed Hong Kong projects.
