Programme Highlights

Passive fire protection or proactive fire protection is one of the most common ways to form fire protection in conjunction with to the existing construction element. It does not require any means to trigger the system to perform the fire protection function. By using fire protection product or system, it helps to form compartmentation either horizontally or vertically to contain toxic smoke or fire from one compartment to another. It also helps to protect structural element so that the structural remain safe in their position. It provides a safe environment for the occupant and rescue personnel. All systems must be tested according to local requirements before they could be launched into the market. For those variation from the test configuration, assessment by testing lab would be required.  In the market, the most common forms of passive fire protection are fire resistant board, fire spray, fire stopping material or fire glazing to perform different fire protection aspects.  Normally, fire resistant board can form vertical compartmentation such as partition, smoke barrier , spandrel while horizontal compartment includes ceiling , enclosure on services . This fire resistant board also form smoke extraction ductwork or ventilation ductwork enclosure, wall or slab fire performance upgrading. Meanwhile, intumescent coating or cementitious spray are normally used for steel structure protection, wall or slab upgrading or some even use it as ductwork protection. For gap and holes in construction element, fire stopping material is an effective means to ensure the complete protection of the construction element.  For fire resistant glazing, it is for door or vertical or some even for horizontal compartmentation.

Passive fire protection or proactive fire protection are normally work together with active fire protection so as to well protect occupant and fire safety personnel. Though there are number of systems in the market to serve the proactive fire protection aspect, the correct use of this system is a prerequisite for the system to perform its anticipated function effectively
