Resort’s Disney Explorers Lodge
By Ir S L Tse
Due
to overwhelming response from members on the
technical visit to the Hong Kong Disneyland Resort in 2015, FE Division
organised the captioned half-day visit on 28 September 2017. The Disneyland
Explorers Lodge (the Lodge) is the third Disney hotel at Lantau Island and
officially opened in May 2017. It occupies 6.4 hectares with a total of 750
guest rooms.
Participants were first welcomed by Mr. C.K. Chan, Electrical
and Mechanical Engineering Manager of Hongkong International Theme Parks Ltd.
Mr. Chan presented the aerial view of the Lodge to show the 9 building blocks for
guest rooms, dining areas, kitchen, offices and plant rooms, and described
facilities provided. He mentioned the specially designed emergency vehicular
access to facilitate future building maintenance for the Lodge. He also showed
a video presentation of the accommodation design according to the four unique
tropical climates of Asia, Oceania, South America and Africa.
After that, Ir Gerald T K Lee, Technical Director of Mott MacDonald,
gave a presentation on the design of fire service installations for the Lodge. He
mentioned the constraints encountered in the design of sprinkler system for
elongated guest room with window bay and circle type end cap guest room. He briefly
explained hydraulic calculations in sprinkler system design for different fire
scenarios. He showed two different videos of water discharge tests conducted at
site to verify the performance of extended coverage horizontal sidewall
sprinkler inside a guest room and the design of sprinkler system.
After the presentations, a guided tour around the Lodge was
arranged. Participants had an opportunity to take a closer look at the extended
coverage horizontal sidewall sprinkler installed in a guest room and the location
of fire shutter with 31m span at the atrium. The visit was well received by our
members.
