As the future fleet of TFL (Transport for London) buses move over to electric within 10-15 years, the requirements for bus garages may change according to the perceived fire risk with the changed fleet. The adoption of Electric vehicles, however, introduces new risks into bus garages such as battery technology, charging technology, new operations, and potential failure modes.

Unfortunately, standards and guidance, particularly those which are safety based, change retrospectively following fire incidents and are rarely ready to embrace incoming technology. There is a need to proactively address these issues when considering future developments for an EV Bus Garage. An EV bus garage mainly accommodates pure electric buses, and also serves hybrid electric buses (HEV) during a transformation period.

This CPD session will brief on the current findings, such as provide advice and guidance on the emerging best practice standards, particularly with regards to the introduction of electric vehicles. This study focuses on life-safety, but also gives considerations on property and asset protection, and on environmental protection.
