FSD has announced through FSD Circular Letter No. 6/2021 the adoption with local modifications of BS 5839-1: 2017. The BS 5839-1: 2017 incorporating Corrigendum No. 1 together with the Technical Guidance has become the design, installation, inspection, and maintenance standard for Fire Detection and Fire Alarm Systems for buildings in Hong Kong on 1 January 2022. The local modifications published in the Technical Guidance were formulated as a result of a series of sub-working group meetings set up under FSD’s Fire Safety Standard Advisory Group.
The presentation aims at giving an overview of the major changes between the new 2017 edition of BS 5839-1 and the former 2002+A2: 2008 edition of BS 5839-1. There are nearly 200 local amendments to the Standard. All critical elements and their impact on the Standard and the Technical Guidance, that need to be observed in the application of the standard, will be addressed.
Speaker
Ir Albert Tang has over 40 years of experience in the fire protection industry. He is specialized in different types of fire protection system design and is conversant in various national standards as well as local regulations. Ir Tang was involved in a variety of local and overseas projects including different types of building, utility structure, and infrastructure. Besides, Ir Tang has over 30 years of teaching experience in various institutes and universities, fostering young practitioners.
Albert is a holder of a BEng(Hons) fire engineering degree, a chartered engineer, a fellow member of the Institution of Fire Engineers, a corporate member of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers Fire Division, and a registered fire professional engineer.
Albert is sitting in the Fire Services Department’s Fire Safety Standard Advisory Group, to review, advise and make recommendations to the Director of Fire Services regarding standards and best practices for the benefit of all stakeholders.
Although Albert has retired, he continues to offer training to fire protection practitioners, sharing his knowledge and experience with the industry.
